Hi friendz, watched madharaasapatinam in Annamalai theatre, Madurai. Evening Show was housefull in Big Cinema's jazz which was my First Choice. So, I drove fast in my Apache to Annamalai Theatre, which didn't live upto my expectation. Coz, screen was very dull, poor projection and theatre maintenance was so bad. The only acceptable thing was gud DTS and atleast a mild AC. Okay, Lemme start the review.
First half - Madharaasapatnam - Movie title Itself suggests that it is an Old story about Chennai, when it was called so under british rule. Padam 1940'sla nadandha oru Love story'ya theme'aa vechu aarambikuthu.Titanic padam madiriye ithulayum oru old lady (80 years of age) flash back solranga. She was admitted in a Hospital in London, for Blood Clot in Brain and has only 50-50 chance of survival, while doctors suggest for immediate operation. But, she explains them that, she has an unfinished task in India and has to go back immediately before undergoing operation. Avangaloda Grand-daughter'um athuku sammathikraanga. 2 perum India kelamburaanga.
Paati, indiala chennaiku varaanga. Apdiye chennai central'la irundhu flashback roll aahuthu. Old chennai'la (i.e. madharaas) british govt. rule nadakuthu. Andha governoroda ponnuthaan indha paati. Britain actress, Amy jackson has acted as a heroine. When she comes for a ride thro rural chennai in a Tram car, she meets Aarya in a stunning Intro sequence, who is young and energetic belonging to the washerman community. These washerman's job is to wash and iron the british peoples clothes.
Aaryavum avanga nanbargalum britishku bayapadaama romba brave'aa irukaanga. Itha paartha heroine aarya kooda palaguraanga. Avaruku english solli thraaanga, Aaryavum bathiluku tamil teach panraar. Oru naal andha heroineku thideernu british general'oda engagement nadakuthu. But, heroine doesnt like to be married to that guy, as he is very cruel and behaves in-human against madharas people.
One day the governor orders to capture all washerman fields for constructing a Golf yard for the british people to play-in. But, all washerman people stand against their activities. So, Amy jackson plays a trick and asks the general to fight against aarya one to one and if he wins, they need not give their land. Fight begins, and as expected aarya wins, as he is already a renowned wrestler. So, avanga land'a thirupi kuduthudraanga. Aarya says thanks to amy, and here their Friendship slowly transforms into a Beautiful Love. Interval...!
Second half - In 1947 Aug 15, india gets freedom. So, british india vitu velila poranga. Amy aryava love panrathu governorku(Amy's father) therinju, elaathayum pack panitu england'ku poga kelamburaanga. Aryava arrest panraanga. Avara suttu kolrathukaga katti vekiraanga. Oda vittu suda poraapa, aarya friends kaapathi kootitu poranga. Aryavum kaalula gundu kaayathoda, amy'ya theduraar. Appa arya andha ponna, railway stationla paakraar. Indiavuku annaiku mid-night 12 'O' clock, freedom kidaikuthu. Vaanathula vedi vedika, varna jaalam therika, aarya heroine'a kootitu oduraar (sema emotional scene!). Aryava kolanumnu General nightoda nightaa kelamburaar. Aanaa, ivanga rendu perum central railway stationla iruka oru Big Wall clock roomla, yaarukum theriyaama olinjukraanga.
Andha place'um epdiyo andha generaluku therinju vandhudraar, appa arya fight panraar, andha general amndaila, heroine suthiyal vechu oru podu podraanga, apparam aarya villan'a maadilarndhu, velila thooki veesi kolraar. Police notice his body falling down. Again the Lover's escape from there, with one of the friends help, starts running, runing and finally they get into the beautiful koovam river (Called as Thames of Chennai @ that time. humm! "Ippa pera kettale chumaa naaruthula!"). They get a boat and pedal towards some silent place under a bridge.(which is currently called as 'napier bridge' near marina).
Angayum police chase pani vandhuruthu. After seeing them round-up, Heroine asks arya to leave her and swim somewhere., so that he will be alive atleast. But, aarya catches the boat's edge from being underneath the river, refuses to go. Then Amy beats his hands severely with pedaling stick several times and he drops down into the water.(Hurray! wat an emotional Love scene!). Flash back ends here!
All these takes place showing the current polluted places in chennai with comparision to the beautiful Madharaas in flash back, with the view from the mind of granny (like Titanic story telling.). Some scenes will remain Aamir khan's Lagaan & ofcourse Titanic. But there are lots and lots of new things that Indian cinema haven't seen yet!
Why she came to Chennai in 2010..? whether she has met Aarya...? Whether aarya survived after that tragedy..? what's behind her search...? All these things will be answered in climax, which is not fare for me to reveal here!
Songs movie'oda onnaa kalandhu Audience'a mesmerism panuthu. Esp pookal pookum, vaamaa dhorayamma and meghame oh meghame are classy! Neraya scenes'la whistles & Claps dhool parakuthu. Some scenes'la whole theatre'um emotional'aa aaguthu... Pindrop silence was observed! Art director Nirav shah has done such a tribute to the film, with his astonishing set's which will never appeal to us as, duplication. Hence 100% realism brings him success! Cinematographer V.Selvakumar, has well captured the period 1947 with differnet color tone and treatment compared to current chennai's Look. BG music was mind-blowing by G.V.Prakash. Comedy by Late VMC Hanifa, as P.A. for Heroine Amy provokes laughter (We miss a good comedian, may peace be upon him!). All other main characters have done a fabulous job. Overall round of applause goes to the Director Vijay, who will be under big directors list hereafter, and expectations raise on him. Kudos to the producer's, as it involves a big budget and in the future they should come-up with such kind 'O' movies to take our tamil cinemas to newer heights of universe!
There are certain places where the movies pace is slow and some scenes where not to the grip of storyline. But, these minor flaws do not stop us from enjoying a lovely emotional ride to the past chennai (Madharaas)!!!
SUPERAPPU : Story, Direction, Artwork, Graphics, cinematography, Acting, BG Music, Songs all are superb. Takes us back to the 1947 - struggle for freedom period with a beautiful love portrayed along with it.
SOTHAPALAPPU : Screenplay could have been little gripper. In 1947 also actors (including aarya) speak's current tamil which is a little letdown. More emotional scenes could have been included as the period is "fight for independence against the cruel british rule"!
FINISHING TOUCH : Indha padam "KOLLYWOOD'S TITANIC" apdinu peru vaangunaa kooda aacharyam illai! Becoz, emotions of love and fight for freedom will strike right through our heart! Despite of the theatre's weakness, I thoroughly enjoyed every frame!
