GLIMPSE - Karu Palniyappan has done great films like parthiban kanavu and pirivom sandhipom. His films were very much admired by the family audience. Here with mandhira punnagai he had shown what he is capable as an actor cum director. Let us analyze.
FIRST HALF - The Film starts with kathir (Karu palaniyappan) who works as architect designer for an infra structure company. He looks emotional at office and cool at home, takes life as it comes. Cheering up the days with alcohol and a girl of his desire. He is so sensitive to any issues. Short tempered and straight forward, but an intelligent worker. His MD admires his work style and never minds what he speaks or does, as he was perfect in completing the projects on time. MD quotes, "Kumbudu podravan olungaa velai seya maataan, Olungaa velai seiravan kumbudu poda maataan" on seeing kathir's intellectual performance despite of his character. Santhanam accompanies kathir as a colleague engineer. As expected, santhanam had done decent comedy throughout the movie. Kathir lives in an apartment. Thambi ramaya as apartment manager has also done a great job as comedian, after a nice cameo in mynaa. Kathir lives single and drinks every night accompanying santhanam and t.ramaya. Meenakshi who works as honda showroom executive, meets kathir in an occassion. As she starts to move friendly with kathir, gets attracted by his true nature and straight forwardness. Both fall in love and movie takes pace. Rishi (Deal'a no deal'a) loves meenakshi one-sided. But she use rishi as a messenger for their love. kathir speaks to his family in village and arranges marriage. But, his father tells, "that girl is not a proper match for you, as you were bad n she will be so!" Thinking this in mind kathir goes back to his apartment. Meenakshi comes to the flat, to speak reg their marriage. When she leaves, kathir sees her accompanying srikanth (actor) in a luxury car down the apartment. He follows them in his bullet. They both enter a grand restaurant and goes into a room. Doubting her activity he climbs up the walls of hotel and moves sideways of their room. He see's what his dad told. Buzzz!
SECOND HALF - Kathir comes back to his apartment after roaming here n there for 3 days, being uprooted by meenakshi's activity. Again his father comes and tells him "I already told you, whatever happened is ok. here after "do not believe her as she would try to convince you n destroy your life." Suddenly meenakshi comes there and kathir with peak of anger beats her to death with whatever he got in his hands. He surrenders to the police. Police comes to the apartment and while searching for the dead body, twist happens. There is no dead body and while police beats kathir, exclaming "r u playing with us?", a psychiatric doctor suddenly stops the police and adages, "Kathir is Mentally ill and he was undergoing treatment for a long period in his care!" Watching all this meenakshi asks doctor, "what happened in kathir's life...?" the flash back rolls, "kathir was affected by the problem right from age 8, as he sees his mother with another man (Her husbands friend). As this matter comes to the knowledge of neighbors and her husband, she runs away with that man. Due to this shame, kathir's father commits suicide and dies." From that incident, kathir started to imagine all things virtually, rightly termed as an optical illusion. He imagines his father was with him and he gives shape to whatever he thinks, which made him doubt meenakshi aswell, even though she was not a bad girl. He undergoes treatment. He starts to hate meenakshi, as she was good and he was bad & doesn't wanna spoil her life. He shows irritation towards her and pretends to avoid her completely. But knowing kathirs illness, meenakshi starts taking care of him with even more love n affection.
CLIMAX - Meenakshi arranges to celebrate kathir's birthday inside his office campus. So, she brings a decorated cake secretly with the knowledge of all staffs. Seeing these arrangements, kathir shouts at her with slang words and asks her to die to keep his mind free. She runs awayfrom that place with shamefulness n failure. Kathir gets a phone call as he drives back home, that announces "Meenakshi died by committing suicide". He drives to the hospital with desperation.
What happens next is up to you readers. Go watch the movie in a sophisticated theatre to fill ur weekdend with joy n ecstasy.
MERITS : Karu palaniyappan was shining like a diamond as a debutant actor, powerful director and sharp dialogue writer. Songs were at right place and very well blends with the situation. Not bored at any place and its for all centre's of audience. Could watch this movie more than once just for those edgy dialogues and mind-cooling songs.
DE-MERITS : Little more grip could have been added to the flash back. Mentally disordered speaking n actions could have been little more violent and thrilling, to add icing to the genre.
MY PUNCH : Mandhira Punnagai is truly a bold and beautiful movie for all people, which puts it under "Must Watch" category. Kudos Mr.K.P!
